A Day Along the Danube — Sample Itinerary

This is a suggested flow — not a fixed schedule. Your driver adapts to your pace and interests.

08:30 — Pickup from your accommodation in Belgrade

Your driver arrives at your hotel or apartment. Coffee stop along the route if needed — there's no rush.

10:30 — Golubac Fortress

Plan 1.5–2 hours inside. The views from the upper towers over the Danube are worth every step. Your driver waits in the parking area below. Licensed guides are available inside the fortress for hire if you want a formal explanation of the history.

12:30 — Lunch near the Danube

Fish restaurants in Golubac town along the riverbank. Eastern Serbian cuisine — fresh river fish, local cheeses, warm bread. Your driver can point you to whichever place is open and worth it that day.

14:00 — Drive through Djerdap National Park

Continue along the Danube road deeper into the gorge. Stop at Kapetan Mišin Breg viewpoint — the gorge from above looks completely different from what you saw at the fortress level.

15:00 — Optional: Boat ride through Iron Gate Gorge (April – October)

A 1–1.5 hour boat cruise through the Iron Gate, the narrowest and deepest section of Djerdap. Paid directly at the dock. One of the more memorable experiences available in Serbia — the scale of the gorge from water level is different from anything on land.

17:00 – 19:00 — Return to Belgrade

Direct return, or with a short stop at Silver Lake (~40 km before Belgrade) — artificial lake on the Danube with sandy shores, good for a swim or coffee break in the warmer months.

Optional Add-ons — Same Day

Because the vehicle is yours for the day, the itinerary is entirely your call. These are the most requested additions:

  • Lepenski Vir — Neolithic archaeological site, ~1 hour further from Golubac. One of Europe's oldest known settlements. Museum open year-round.
  • Silver Lake (Srebrno Jezero) — Artificial Danube lake ~40 km before Belgrade on the return. Sandy shores, fish restaurants, good for a swim from May through September.
  • Ram Fortress — Well-preserved Ottoman fortress on the Danube, ~80 km from Belgrade. Worth 30–45 minutes on the way out.
  • Viminacium — Roman archaeological open-air museum near Požarevac. Mosaics, tombs, reconstructed Roman camp. On the return route.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Golubac Fortress from Belgrade?

Golubac Fortress is approximately 130 km from central Belgrade. By private vehicle, the drive takes 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic. The route follows the E75 motorway toward Požarevac, then continues along the Danube road through Rama and Golubac town to the fortress.

Is this a guided tour or just a driver?

This is a private driver service — not a licensed guided tour. Your driver is English-speaking, knows the Golubac and Djerdap area well, and can share context about the region during the drive. You explore the fortress independently and at your own pace. Licensed guides are available inside the fortress for a separate fee if you want a formal walkthrough of the history.

Can I add Lepenski Vir or Silver Lake to the same trip?

Yes. The vehicle is yours for the full day, so the itinerary is flexible. Lepenski Vir is about 1 hour further along the Djerdap road from Golubac. Silver Lake is on the return route, approximately 40 km before Belgrade. Adding both stops extends the trip to 10–12 hours. Mention what you'd like to include when requesting a quote.

Is the Danube boat ride included in the price?

No — the boat ride through Iron Gate Gorge is paid separately, directly at the dock. Prices typically range from €15 to €25 per person for a 1–1.5 hour cruise. Boat rides operate from approximately April through October. In winter, the fortress and Lepenski Vir remain open, but the boat is not available.

What time should we leave Belgrade?

We recommend departing between 8:00 and 9:30 AM. This gets you to the fortress before the majority of group tour buses, which typically arrive around 10:30–11:00 AM. If you plan to include Lepenski Vir and a boat ride, an 8:00 AM start gives you enough time for a relaxed return before dark.

Can pickup be arranged from Belgrade Airport?

Yes. Pickup from Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) is available. We can combine your arrival transfer with a direct route to Golubac before you check into your Belgrade hotel, or schedule the tour on a day that works around your flights. Contact us with your arrival details and we'll suggest the best arrangement.

Is the trip suitable for families with children or older travelers?

Yes, with some practical notes. The fortress involves stairs and uneven stone terrain — comfortable shoes are important. The lower zone (Zone 1) is more accessible; the upper towers require more effort. Because you have a private vehicle, the pace is entirely yours — no rushing to match a group schedule. Child seats are available on request.

What's the difference between Djerdap Gorge and the Iron Gate?

Djerdap Gorge (Đerdap) is the full 100+ km gorge system on the Danube between Serbia and Romania — the longest river gorge in Europe. The Iron Gate (Gvozdena kapija) refers specifically to the narrowest and most dramatic section of the gorge, where the Danube squeezes to about 150 meters wide and reaches depths of over 80 meters. The boat ride passes through the Iron Gate section.
